Understanding Confidence Intervals for Non-Statisticians

Confidence intervals show up in research papers, SPSS output, and committee feedback — yet most graduate students can't explain what they actually mean. If you're one of them, you're not alone, and this guide is for you.

What a Confidence Interval Is

A confidence interval (CI) gives you a range of plausible values for a population parameter based on your sample data. Instead of a single-point estimate, you get a range that reflects the uncertainty in your measurement.

For example, if your sample mean is 75 and your 95% CI is [71, 79], you're saying: "Based on my data, the true population mean is plausibly somewhere between 71 and 79."

The Correct Interpretation

Here's the technically correct interpretation of a 95% confidence interval: if you repeated your study 100 times and calculated a CI each time, about 95 of those intervals would contain the true population parameter.

It does not mean there's a 95% probability that the true value falls within your specific interval. The true value is fixed — it's either in there or it isn't. The "95%" refers to the long-run performance of the method.

That said, for practical purposes in your dissertation, thinking of the CI as "a range of plausible values" is a useful and widely accepted simplification.

Why Confidence Intervals Matter More Than You Think

Confidence intervals give you three pieces of information that p-values alone cannot:

1. Direction

Is the effect positive or negative? The CI shows you.

2. Magnitude

How large is the effect? A CI of [0.5, 3.2] tells you the effect is somewhere between small and moderate. A CI of [12.1, 18.4] tells you it's substantial.

3. Precision

How certain are you? A narrow CI like [4.1, 4.9] indicates a precise estimate. A wide CI like [1.2, 14.8] means you have a lot of uncertainty — probably because your sample was too small.

Confidence Intervals and Significance

There's a useful connection between 95% CIs and significance at α = .05:

  • If the 95% CI for a mean difference does not include zero, the result is statistically significant at p < .05.
  • If the 95% CI for a correlation does not include zero, the correlation is statistically significant.
  • If the 95% CI for an odds ratio does not include 1.0, the odds ratio is significant.

This gives you a quick visual check: look at the interval and see whether it crosses the null value.

How to Report Confidence Intervals in APA Style

APA 7th edition strongly encourages reporting CIs for all major results. The format uses brackets:

"The treatment group scored higher than the control group, M = 6.40, 95% CI [4.20, 8.60]."

"The correlation between study hours and GPA was significant, r = .42, 95% CI [.28, .54], p < .001."

"Participants in the intervention group had significantly higher scores (M = 82.3, SD = 7.1) than the control group (M = 75.9, SD = 8.4), with a mean difference of 6.4, 95% CI [3.1, 9.7], t(88) = 3.86, p < .001, d = 0.81."

Common Mistakes

  1. Not reporting them at all. APA recommends CIs, and many committees require them. Don't skip them.
  2. Confusing confidence level with probability. A 95% CI doesn't mean 95% probability. Use the "range of plausible values" framing.
  3. Ignoring wide intervals. A significant result with a very wide CI means your estimate is imprecise. Discuss this as a limitation and connect it to sample size.
  4. Only reporting CIs for significant results. Report them for all results. A non-significant result with a CI of [-0.1, 5.2] tells you the effect could be meaningful — you just didn't have enough power to detect it.

The Bigger Picture

If p-values are like a fire alarm (yes or no), confidence intervals are like a weather forecast — they give you a range of what to expect and how confident you should be. They're one of the most informative statistics you can report, and they're increasingly expected in modern research. Make them a standard part of your results reporting alongside effect sizes.
